Wolverine Just Gave Sony Its Biggest Boxed UK Launch of the Year — With About 15 Months of Discs Left

Marvel's Wolverine is the third biggest PS5 boxed launch in the UK this year and nearly three times the size of Death Stranding 2. It is also 60% below Spider-Man 2 — and both of those facts matter.

Marvel's Wolverine has given Sony its biggest physical PlayStation launch of 2026 in the UK. It arrives with roughly 15 months before Sony stops manufacturing physical PlayStation games altogether.

The numbers

From Christopher Dring of The Game Business, who tracks the UK charts:

  • The No.3 biggest PS5 UK launch of 2026 by boxed sales, behind Resident Evil and 007
  • Ahead of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced
  • Nearly 3x the boxed launch of Death Stranding 2
  • 60% lower than Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • Marginally lower than Ghost of Yotei

This is a different measurement from the one that made headlines last week. That was Alinea Analytics' estimate of roughly 1.9 million copies sold globally in three days, counting digital. This is UK retail chart data, discs only — a narrow slice, but a real count rather than a model.

Both halves of this are true

It would be easy to write this up as "discs are alive and well." It would be just as easy to write "physical is collapsing." The figures support both, and that is the interesting part.

Discs still move for a tentpole. A single-character, single-player, PS5-only game shifted enough boxed copies to lead Sony's year in the UK and to triple what Death Stranding 2 managed. People still buy discs when they care about a release.

But the pool is shrinking fast. Being 60% below Spider-Man 2 is the number that should give anyone pause. That is not a small decline over three years for a comparable Marvel-branded, Insomniac-developed PlayStation exclusive. "Biggest of 2026" is a ranking within a market that has contracted sharply.

Why it lands awkwardly

Sony stops producing physical PlayStation games in January 2028. That is the context this chart sits in, and it cuts in two directions at once.

If you support the decision, the Spider-Man 2 comparison is your evidence: the market is falling away, and manufacturing, shipping and stocking discs for a shrinking audience is a cost with an end date on it.

If you oppose it, the top of the chart is your evidence: when a big exclusive arrives, the boxed edition still outsells everything else on shelves. And a decline is not purely natural — storefront pricing, preorder bonuses and digital-only premium editions all push buyers one way.

We have seen the shape of what comes next across the autumn. GTA 6's physical edition is a download code in a box. Final Fantasy VII Revelation ships on one disc with a mandatory download, where the two games before it came complete on two. Marvel's Wolverine's own premium edition was digital-only.

Wolverine's chart-topping week is not evidence that the disc is safe. It is a look at what the market still does when a game people actually want turns up on a shelf — about 15 months before it stops being an option.
