Marvel's Wolverine is live on PS5. It unlocked at midnight local time on 15 September across most regions — which on the US West Coast meant 9pm Pacific on the 14th, the same moment as midnight Eastern.
Preloads opened a full week earlier, on 8 September. If you preordered digitally, it is almost certainly already sitting on your console.
Install size
- Base install: 79.36 GB
- After the day-one patch: roughly 81.4 GB
The day-one update is version 01.001.001. Budget a little over 81GB of free space, not 79.
What the day-one patch adds
Two things, and one of them is not cosmetic:
- A full photo mode. It is not in the shipped build — it arrives with the patch.
- Stability improvements.
Install the update before you start if you care about photo mode.
You do not need a PS5 Pro
Worth stating plainly, because it affects whether you buy hardware: Wolverine runs at 60fps with ray tracing enabled on a standard PS5. Ray-traced reflections at 60fps have generally been the reason to want a Pro. Here they are not.
New Game+ is in at launch
Unusually, New Game+ ships day one rather than arriving in a patch months later. You can replay completed chapters and full missions while keeping the abilities and upgrades you unlocked on your first run.
There are also Nightmare Challenges — a harder difficulty layer for players who finish the campaign and want the fight to keep escalating.
Where it is cheapest
- Standard Edition — $69.99. Disc or digital, at PlayStation Direct, the PlayStation Store, GameStop, Target, Best Buy and Amazon. Walmart listed it at $69.00.
- Digital Deluxe — $79.99. PlayStation Store only. There is no boxed version of the premium tier.
- Limited Edition PS5 bundle — $649.99. A PS5 Digital Edition, a Battle Yellow DualSense and a download code for the game.
- No Collector's Edition. Insomniac has confirmed there will not be one.
Launch-week retail prices move fast. Check before you buy.
Should you buy it today?
The reviews were divided. Wolverine sits at 77–78 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, where 71% of critics recommend it — solid scores, but the lowest for a PlayStation Studios game this generation by Kotaku's count. Individual reviews ranged from 6 to a perfect 10.
The split was consistent: critics agreed the character and the combat are right, and disagreed about whether there is enough game around them. If you are here for Wolverine himself, that is the half the reviews were positive about. If you buy Insomniac games for the open world, the criticism was aimed squarely at you.
Prices and aggregate scores are at time of writing.
