Marvel's Wolverine launches on PlayStation 5 on 15 September 2026, developed by Insomniac Games. It is the studio's first Marvel title since Spider-Man 2, and the first from that partnership aimed at a mature audience.

Sony is also releasing a Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 console bundle and matching accessories on the same day, in limited quantities.

What Insomniac has confirmed about the game

Two details matter more than the rest, because both cut against what people assumed after Spider-Man.

It is single-player and narrative-driven. No multiplayer component has been announced.

It is not open world. This is the one that surprised people. Insomniac's Marvel output to date has been defined by open-city traversal, and the studio is explicitly not doing that here. Wolverine does not swing across rooftops; the character works at close range, in confined spaces, at ground level. A more contained structure suits him considerably better than a borough-sized playground would.

That is a studio adapting its design to a character rather than reusing a template, and it is a good sign.

The bundle

Sony's phrasing is limited quantities, which in recent PlayStation hardware history has meant genuinely limited. The Limited Edition console and accessories go on sale from 15 September.

If you want one, treat it as a launch-day purchase rather than something to consider later. Marvel-branded PlayStation hardware has historically not sat on shelves, and secondary-market pricing on previous limited runs got unpleasant quickly.

If you are weighing whether the hardware is worth it beyond the artwork, our breakdowns of which PS5 to buy and whether the PS5 Pro is worth it cover the underlying decision — a limited-edition shell does not change the performance question.

Where it sits in a very crowded month

September 2026 is the most congested PlayStation release month in years. Wolverine on the 15th is followed by Silent Hill: Townfall and Control Resonant on the 24th and Onimusha: Way of the Sword on the 25th.

Wolverine has the most breathing room of the four, sitting nine days clear of that cluster. Whether that is enough for a headline first-party release competing with the back half of its own month is a fair question — our full breakdown is in the September 2026 PS5 release calendar.

For trophy hunters

Nothing has been confirmed about the trophy list, and anyone telling you otherwise before launch is guessing.

What is reasonable to expect, based on Insomniac's record: a well-constructed, achievable list without adversarial grinds, and a platinum that does not require multiplayer. Insomniac's Marvel platinums have consistently been among the more pleasant first-party lists to complete. A mature-rated, more linear game may well produce a tighter list than the open-world entries did.

If you are new to hunting and planning to start with this one, how to start trophy hunting on PlayStation is the place to begin.

Verified 26 August 2026. Release date and bundle confirmed by Sony.
