The reaction to this State of Play has been rough. Push Square ran a reader poll on it. Fan comments collected across outlets ran to "genuinely the worst PlayStation presentation I have ever seen" and "should've been an email."
Reaction pieces are cheap, though, and vibes are not evidence. So here is the show sorted by release date instead, because the calendar explains the mood better than the mood does.
What is left of 2026
Games:
- Marvel's Wolverine — 15 September
- Final Fantasy Resonance — 22 October (multiplatform)
- Hunter's Moon — 26 October
- Crimson Desert: Charting The Unknown — 15 October (expansion)
Not games:
- Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, with the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion and Most Wanted mode — 1 October. Worth noting this was announced on the PlayStation Blog on 12 August; the show screened a trailer, it was not a reveal. Existing owners upgrade for $14.99.
- Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV — split across October and December
- Saros Zenith update — later in 2026
- LEGO PlayStation set — 4 October, $179.99
- GTA 6 Limited Edition DualSense — 19 November
- Mycopunk to PS Plus Extra/Premium — later in 2026
Read that list back. Past 15 September, Sony's first-party output for the rest of the calendar year is one expansion, two patches, a LEGO set and a controller.
What is in 2027
- Until Dawn 2 — 28 January
- Metro 2039 — 4 February
- Gundam Rogue Orbit — 5 March
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation — 8 April
- Maneater 2 — 2027
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance — 2027
- Rev. Noir — 2027
- Uncanyon — 2027
Eight titles. Of those, exactly one — Until Dawn 2 — is a PS5 exclusive.
The actual finding
This was not a bad show because the games were bad. Metro 2039, Revelation and Until Dawn 2 are all substantial. It landed badly because of when everything is.
A September showcase is conventionally where a platform holder sells you its holiday quarter. Sony's holiday quarter, as presented, is: a game that comes out in twelve days, and then somebody else's game — GTA 6 — that Sony does not publish and cannot claim.
The 2027 column is where the real slate lives, and it is nineteen months deep in places.
Which raises the harder question
If Sony's own showcase concedes that the games are 2027, then 2027 is also the window most leaks and analysts point to for PlayStation 6. Reporting has ranged from a Holiday 2027 target to a slip into 2028 or 2029, with the current memory-supply crunch cited as a live risk to the schedule.
Sony has not confirmed any of it. CEO Hiroki Totoki has said on the record that the console has no fixed release date, and that remains the only official position — everything else is leak and analyst material, and should be read that way.
But the collision is worth stating clearly: Sony has now publicly stacked its strongest first-party and third-party releases into the same twelve-month window that its next console is widely believed to be aiming at. Until Dawn 2 in January, Revelation in April, and a hardware transition somewhere behind them.
Either those games become the send-off for the PS5, or they become the launch window for whatever replaces it. The showcase did not say which, and that ambiguity — not the quality of the trailers — is the reason a slate this strong played to a room this flat.
Drafted 3 September 2026, the day of the broadcast.
