Xbox Insiders can start converting their disc collections into digital entitlements today.
The mechanic is as simple as Microsoft could have made it: put a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X, launch the game, claim the entitlement. From then on the title carries its digital-side features — Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming where the game supports them. Microsoft says most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games qualify.
You keep the disc. It stays playable.
The catch, stated plainly
The entitlement binds to the system that claimed it, and it follows the disc rather than staying with you. If somebody else later claims the licence from that same disc, the original claimant loses it.
That is sensible anti-abuse design — otherwise one disc passed around a group mints unlimited licences. But it means the honest description is convert the disc you are keeping, not convert the disc and then sell it. Anyone planning to digitise a collection and move the physical copies on should understand that before they start.
Why this lands the way it does
Eight weeks ago Sony announced that from January 2028 it will stop manufacturing discs for new PlayStation games. That triggered petitions, then an organised boycott that ran through last week.
Microsoft did not build this in eight weeks — entitlement infrastructure takes far longer, and the programme leaked repeatedly through 2026. What Microsoft chose was the timing of the announcement, landing it squarely inside the protest.
It is worth being honest about where this actually goes. Xbox is widely expected to move away from disc drives too. Disc to Digital is not a defence of physical media; it is a graceful exit ramp from it — a way to make the same transition feel like a service rather than a confiscation.
Which is exactly the contrast being drawn. Sony's message to disc owners has been this is ending. Microsoft's is bring your library with you. The destination looks similar. The handling does not.
What it means if you own a PS5
Directly, nothing. There is no PlayStation equivalent, none has been announced, and no mechanism exists by which a PS5 disc becomes a digital licence.
Indirectly, it is the most effective pressure applied to Sony on this issue so far — considerably more than a hashtag, because it removes the "there was no alternative" defence. A competitor has now demonstrated, in shipping code, that a company moving to digital can bring its customers' existing purchases along.
Sony's position remains no reversal. The 2028 date stands. But the argument about how a platform retires physical media now has a worked example on the other side of the aisle, and that is a harder thing to ignore than a petition.
