GTA Online lobbies on PS4 have been overrun with mod menus again — god mode, invisibility, manipulated ranks, and cash dropped on strangers.
The cause is a jailbreak covering PS4 firmware 13.52 and lower. Crucially, consoles on that firmware were reportedly still passing PlayStation Network authentication, so modified machines could sign in and play online rather than being confined to offline use.
Three things being widely misreported
This is not a PS5 jailbreak. There is still no public jailbreak for PS5. The PS5 security stories of this year — the BootROM keys, the hypervisor research, a prominent researcher walking away — are all about what may become possible. This is a twelve-year-old console with a mature modding scene, and the two situations are not the same thing.
It is not affecting every game. In principle a modified console signed in to PSN can reach any PS4 multiplayer title. In practice the reported damage is concentrated almost entirely in GTA Online, because that is where the ready-made mod menus already exist. We looked for comparable reports across other big online games on PS4 and did not find them.
Sony has shipped an update, but we cannot confirm it has closed the door. PS4 firmware 14.00 arrived on 16 September, a surprise release for a console this old, with patch notes that say only that it improves "system software performance and stability." Several summaries state that Sony has since made 14.00 mandatory to sign in to PSN, cutting the jailbroken firmware off. We could not verify that. The two reports we were able to read directly both said the opposite — that 13.52 consoles were still authenticating when the warnings went out. Treat "Sony has blocked it" as unconfirmed until Sony says so.
What to actually do
Update your PS4. Whatever is or is not being enforced, the current firmware is the one with the security fixes, and running an old build to preserve an exploit is not something a normal player has any reason to do.
Do not accept unexpected money or RP. This is the part that can cost you rather than the modder. Receiving large unexplained sums can draw the attention of Rockstar's anti-cheat and enforcement systems — although, to be fair, Rockstar has not issued a specific warning about this incident. The modder loses a throwaway account; you could lose the one with your progress on it.
Leave and report. Quit to a fresh session rather than staying to see what happens, and report the player. If public lobbies are unplayable, invite-only or solo sessions still work for most activities.
Do not go looking for the tools. Beyond the obvious risk to your account and hardware, the sites hosting this material are not a safe place to download anything.
Why this keeps happening
The PS4 is old. Security research against it is cheap, the exploit surface has been mapped for years, and every firmware eventually falls. Sony patches, the scene moves to the new version, and the cycle repeats — but each turn now lands on a console whose player base is largely people who never upgraded, playing games with a decade of mod tooling behind them.
That is the uncomfortable part for anyone still on PS4: the machine keeps working, and the protection around it keeps thinning.
We report on console security because it affects players. We do not publish exploit details, tools or links to them.
